We added some more biodiversity equipment to our school grounds as part of our work on the Biodiversity theme. We added an insect block, a bee and bug biome, an insect house, a mini bug hotel, a ladybird tower, an urban bee/insect nester and two new birdhouses to the school ground. Adding equipment to the school grounds to encourage greater biodiversity in our school gardens and grounds was one of the main aims of our Action Plan and our Green Schools committee Biodiversity team will observe our new equipment to record any ways in which it helps to increase biodiversity in our school gardens. Check out the pictures below to see our new equipment around the school:
We would encourage everyone to use the new household recycling list to sort litter and waste items in their house for the green bin. This new list makes things very easy by only listing what can go into the green bin. These lists were put up around the school by our Litter and Waste team as a reminder of what goes into the recycling bins in our classrooms so be sure to use this list at home. See recyclinglistireland.ie/ for more
Congratulations to our school champion from this year's Recycled Christmas decorations competition. Jude went to the celebration ceremony in County Hall, Dun Laoghaire with other school champions and An Cathaoirleach, Cllr. Tom Murphy. The ceremony was given a segment on RTE News 2day too which may be viewed here. Roberts of Dalkey have kindly allowed us to display the rest of the wonderful entries to the school in their window for Christmas. The Green Schools Committee put these up last week and it was a great chance to show the community our Green Schools work in the school. Take a look at the pictures below to see the decorated window and we would like to thank Roberts again for their help and the hot chocolates! :) In science the boys designed a bird feeder, went bird watching and set up a wormery. As well as bird watching at school, they have to try and identify birds for homework today. They are using the identification sheet on the left. We are hoping our bird feeder at the front of the school attracts a lot of birds and helps to feed them during the cold winter. We are also hoping that the worms will mix up the soil in our wormery. This video basically explains the water cycle and how it works.First of all the clouds absorb water. Then, when the cloud is full, it bursts. This is called rain. After that, the rain fills up our rivers. Rain also helps us to grow crops and last of all gutters on the road get filled up with water. This water goes through a series of pipes where it gets cleaned, then carried to our homes. So basically water is VERY IMPORTANT!
Yesterday 3rd class went on a minibeast hunt. We collected, identified and examined minibeast in pairs. The boys did some great work and really enjoyed it! (Check out more of the third class boys' fantastic work at https://haroldbns.blogspot.ie/ )
